He was the first of three sons born to Andrew Guffy Shell & Mary Belle Reasoner. Leland was raised on the Shell farm in Rumsey, California, a remote town on Highway 16 between Woodland and Clear Lake. The Shells raised almonds and apricots and had a small dairy herd. During the Depression and panic of 1929, Andrew Shell withdrew Leland from Esparto High School to run the family farm while Andrew got a paid job. Leland's sacrifice saved the farm from foreclosure and enabled his younger brothers to finish high school. Leland himself, a talented mechanic, later worked in the California Conservation Corps, Brooks Garage, and the Woodland Packard Garage. In December, 1941, Leland's youngest brother Elton married Phyllis Hughes of Santa Barbara. Her father, Ralph, invited Leland to live at the Hughes home on Serena Road and work for him. Leland was to live in Santa Barbara County for the rest of his life. In 1942 Leland attended sheet metal working classes at Santa Barbara City College as a part of civilian War work. There he met Stella Louise Welborn, who lived at Rancheria Motor Hotel in Montecito, owned by her sister and brother-in-law, Marjorie and Jack Langhorne. Somehow the shy country boy was fascinated by the gregarious city girl, and soon a serious relationship developed. When War work took both of them to Sacramento, Leland escorted his fiancee to meet his parents in Rumsey. He then decided to join the Army Air Corps (later Air Force) before he got drafted and had no choice. He got orders for the base in Hobbs, New Mexico, to work on military aircraft, while Stella got a job in the supply depot there. He and Stella were married in Hobbs on December 23, 1943. Before Leland's discharge in 1945, he attained the rank of Staff Sergeant with the 960th Bombardier Training Squadron of the Army Air Corps. After the War, Leland and Stella returned to Santa Barbara to manage the Rancheria Motor Hotel for the Langhornes. Their friendly management encouraged many repeat visitors and made lifelong friends of some. Life changed for Lee and Stella in 1949 with the birth of their daughter, Marjorie. They left the demanding hotel work and settled in Goleta, where Leland resumed working for Ralph Hughes, as warehouseman, salesman, and certified Pest Control Advisor. After Ralph retired, Leland remained in the business, and retired from Western Farm Service in 1981. The Shells attended Goleta Federated Church (now Community Covenant Church) and knew many of the farming families in the Goleta Valley. While never very talkative about his faith, he read his Bible often and demonstrated his faith by his faithfulness to the church and his family. During the last year of Stella's life, she was often ill. A heart attack and small strokes weakened her, and Leland once again showed the spirit of self-sacrifice that had saved the family farm. During her last six months, Leland slept on a mattress on the floor at her bedroom door, in case she needed him. Every morning he picked it back up, threw it behind the couch, and went to work. To retain health care coverage for her, he retired only after her death on December 7, 1980. Leland was a quiet man whose emotions were not displayed for the world. Yet his sense of humor was sharp and very dry, often surprising those who knew him best. He is best remembered for his surpassing loyalty to family and friends. He kept close track of birthdays and anniversaries and sent cards on time. When traveling he never failed to visit extended family members and his friends of many years. Leland was preceded in death by his wife, Stella, and his youngest brother, Elton. He is survived by his daughter____; a grandson____; his brother____; nephews____; nieces ____; and eight great-nieces and nephews. Leland was shy, faithful, and loyal, a man of deep feelings and upright actions. The world was a richer place for Leland Shell's presence. Many friends will remember him simply as "Lee Shell." Younger family members will remember him as Uncle Lee. Marjorie will remember him as her quiet hero. A memorial service will be held at Community Covenant Church, 5070 Cathedral Oaks Rd, Santa Barbara, on Monday, October 13, 2003 at 2:00 pm.
